The Types of Sampling
Air sampling draws a measured volume of air through a collection cassette. The lab counts and identifies spores, and results are compared against an outdoor control sample taken the same day.
Surface sampling — tape lift or swab — identifies what is growing on a specific surface. It confirms species but says nothing about what is airborne.
Bulk sampling sends a piece of the actual material to the lab. It is the most definitive for a specific location.
Why the Outdoor Control Matters
Mold spores exist in outdoor air everywhere, always. An indoor result showing spores present means nothing on its own.
The meaningful comparison is indoor versus outdoor on the same day. Indoor concentrations substantially above outdoor levels, or indoor species not present outdoors, suggest an indoor source. Any report without an outdoor control is difficult to interpret.
When Testing Is Worth It
- A musty smell with no visible source, to confirm and help locate a problem
- Symptoms that improve away from home, where you need to know whether the building is involved
- Real estate transactions, where documentation matters to both parties
- Insurance claims requiring evidence of extent and type
- Verification after remediation, to confirm the work met its criteria
- Situations involving immunocompromised, asthmatic, elderly, or very young occupants
When It Is Not
If you can see mold and know where the water came from, testing usually will not change what happens next. The affected material comes out either way.
Spending several hundred dollars to confirm that visible mold is mold is money better spent on the remediation.
Who Can Do It in Texas
Texas licenses mold assessment through TDLR, and the assessing company cannot be the remediating company on the same project.
That rule is your protection. An assessor who cannot bid the removal has no financial reason to inflate the finding — which is exactly why a free test from a remediation company is both prohibited and a bad idea.
