Cladosporium: The Most Common of All
Cladosporium is among the most abundant molds worldwide, indoors and out. It appears olive-green to brown or black, often with a suede-like texture.
It tolerates cooler conditions than many molds and grows on window sills, painted surfaces, fabrics, HVAC components, and the back of toilet tanks. Its presence in air samples is normal; elevated indoor concentrations relative to outdoors are what suggest an indoor source.
Penicillium: Fast and Opportunistic
Penicillium is typically blue-green with a powdery surface. It colonizes damp material quickly, which makes it the mold that most often appears after a water event before anything else takes hold.
Water-damaged drywall, wet carpet and pad, damp insulation, and stored items in humid spaces are its usual homes. Finding it after a leak is expected rather than surprising.
What They Indicate
Both are common enough that their presence is not dramatic in itself. What matters is amount and location. A small amount of Cladosporium on a window sill in a Houston summer is a humidity and condensation issue.
Widespread Penicillium across a wall two weeks after a plumbing leak means the drying was inadequate and material is still wet behind the surface.
Health Considerations
Both are recognized allergens. In sensitized people they can produce the standard picture: congestion, sneezing, eye and throat irritation, cough, and asthma symptoms.
Neither carries the systemic-illness mythology attached to Stachybotrys, and the evidence for severe effects in healthy adults is limited. That is not a reason to leave them alone — it is a reason to respond proportionately.
The Response Is the Same
This is the recurring theme across every species: identification rarely changes what you do. Find the water, fix it, remove porous material that stayed wet, and dry the assembly properly.
Species identification matters most for medical evaluation and for documentation in insurance or legal contexts — not usually for deciding the scope of the work.
