What Mold Allergy Usually Looks Like
For most people, mold exposure produces allergic-type symptoms: nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, throat irritation, coughing, and sometimes skin irritation. These are the same mechanisms behind pollen or dust allergies.
Severity varies enormously between people. Two people in the same house can have completely different responses to identical exposure, which is why one family member's symptoms are not proof that everyone is affected — or that no one is.
The Pattern That Points to Your Home
The most useful diagnostic signal is not the symptom itself but its timing. Symptoms that improve when you leave the house for a day or two, and return within hours of coming back, suggest something in the building.
Seasonal allergies follow outdoor pollen counts and tend to affect you everywhere. A workday-only pattern points at your office. A pattern that tracks specifically with being home is the one worth investigating.
Who Tends to React More
- People with existing allergies or allergic rhinitis
- People with asthma, in whom mold can trigger attacks rather than just congestion
- Infants and young children
- Older adults
- People who are immunocompromised, including those on immunosuppressive medication or undergoing cancer treatment
- People with chronic lung conditions such as COPD
What the Evidence Does and Does Not Support
There is solid evidence linking indoor dampness and mold to upper respiratory symptoms, cough, wheeze, and asthma exacerbation. That much is well established in the public health literature.
Claims that ordinary household mold causes severe systemic illness — memory loss, autoimmune disease, widespread neurological damage — are far more contested and not well supported by current mainstream evidence. Be cautious with any source that leads with those claims, particularly if it is also selling you testing.
What To Actually Do
See your doctor about the symptoms. Allergy testing can confirm whether you are sensitized to mold specifically, which is useful information.
Separately, investigate the building. If there is visible growth, a musty smell, or a history of leaks, address the moisture. Treating symptoms while the source remains is a treadmill.
