Black Mold in Katy, TX

It deserves a serious response. It does not deserve the mythology attached to it.

Color Identifies Almost Nothing

"Black mold" is not a species. Many molds appear dark — Cladosporium, several Aspergillus species, Alternaria, and others. Stachybotrys chartarum, the organism people usually mean, is one of many and is considerably less common than the rest.

You cannot identify mold visually. A dark patch on Katy drywall is statistically far more likely to be something ordinary, and either way the response is identical.

What Stachybotrys Actually Requires

Stachybotrys needs sustained saturation, not just humidity. It grows on high-cellulose material — paper-faced drywall, cardboard, wood — that has been genuinely wet for days or longer.

That makes it relatively common after Katy flood events and long-running leaks, and uncommon in a merely humid bathroom.

What the Evidence Supports

Mold exposure is associated with allergic and respiratory effects: congestion, cough, wheeze, eye and throat irritation, and asthma exacerbation. For immunocompromised people, some molds cause serious infections. This is well established.

Claims that household black mold causes severe systemic illness in otherwise healthy people — memory loss, autoimmune disease, widespread neurological harm — are contested and not well supported. A widely publicized 1990s link to infant pulmonary hemorrhage was later reviewed and found insufficient.

Why the Fear Persists

Alarm sells testing and remediation. There is a commercial incentive to describe every dark patch as toxic black mold requiring immediate expensive intervention.

This is precisely the conflict Texas legislated against. Occupations Code Section 1958.155 bars the same company from assessing and remediating a project, so the party evaluating your home cannot profit from enlarging the finding.

Handling It Correctly
